Dish Network is the second-largest provider of satelite TV service in the United States. The Dish Network service offers a free satellite TV system and a slightly larger channel selection than DIRECTV. The Free Dish Network satellite system includes a service (which you must pay for on a monthly basis) that distributes its satelite programming with a fleet of nine satellites. These Dish Network satelites provide TV coverage to all 50 of the US States as well as Puerto Rico (Dish Network customers outside the Continental US may need larger satellite dishes). For customers with high definition TV sets, Dish Network offers optional HDTV equipment and service packages that give viewers access to up to 9 high definition channels. After you get your free Dish Network satellite TV system and sign up for their service you can get HDTV programming including ESPNHD, DiscoveryHD, HDNet and HDNetMovies. The Dish Network service also offers a vast lineup of foreign language programming for your system, including multiple language choices not available from other satelite networks.
Satellite vs. Cable
Cable packages vary from city to city and state to state. On the other hand, Dish Network satellite Tv service offers coverage that is the same everywhere in the U.S. and is cheaper than cable rates. "Digital cable TV" has nearly as many total video and audio channels as the Dish Network satellite offer but does cost a bit more per channel. If you want to get the most from your free Dish Network satellite TV system offer then you need to think ahead about what channels or types of programming you want to see, and chose your service packages accordingly.
Direct tv only has a single LNB (the receiving end on the Satelite Dish) and they will experience bandwidth problems as programming continues to expand and increasingly switches to HDTV. Fortunately, DISH Network has planned ahead and has launched many programs to make sure that it can offer unlimited bandwidth capabilities for it's system.
Satellite TV Dish Choices
These days there are basically two choices when it comes to satellite tv. You can either get a free system from Dish Network or Directv®. Whichever satelite service you choose, you will probably end up with a better product than if you were to stick with cable television. With satelite tv service you simply get a better value and many more channels to choose from. Sure, Dish Network and Directtv have their differences. But with a little shopping around and comparing services you should be able to find the satellite tv system that is best suited to the needs of your family. It also doesn't hurt that you can get a free dish and system from either of these service providers.
Review the offers that are available and then make your decision. You can always change your mind later. In general, satellite tv operates on a fairly simple basis. (See Diagram Below)

This is the EarthThe signals originated from the broadcast station must travel over 20,000 miles before they are bounced off the satellite in the sky. The satellite that are used for television are all located in what is called "The Clark Belt". It was named after the famous author of "2001" as well as many other science fiction novels.
The signals then travel another 20,000 miles where they are received by a small satellite dish that is mounted on your roof (or another location). The signal goes from there into your satellite tv receiver where it is processed and made into pictures that you can view on your television set. Obviously, this is a very simplified version of "How Satellite TV Works" but as long as it works, who really cares?
Note: People who are looking into satellite TV are usually those who have recently moved. Another service that is popular with people who have recently moved is security. A recent rise in home security system sales would indicate that there is a definite need for these services. Just like satellite TV and cable services, the security industry relies heavily on people who are in the middle of relocating or have recently moved.
